Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Remove Standing Water

Before diagnosing, remove standing water with towels or a wet/dry vacuum. This allows you to inspect the drain area and prevents water from spilling during repairs.

A turkey baster can help remove water from hard-to-reach areas.
2

Check and Clean the Filter

Remove the bottom rack and check the filter assembly. Remove any food debris, broken glass, or foreign objects. A clogged filter is the most common cause of drainage issues.

Broken glass can accumulate here - use caution when reaching into the filter area.
3

Inspect the Drain Hose

Look under the sink where the drain hose connects to the garbage disposal or sink drain. Check for kinks, clogs, or disconnection. The hose should have a high loop to prevent backflow.

The high loop should be secured at least 20 inches above the floor.
4

Check the Garbage Disposal

If connected to a disposal, run it to clear any blockages. New disposals often have a knockout plug that must be removed where the dishwasher drain connects.

Never put your hand in the disposal - use a flashlight to look inside.
5

Clear the Air Gap (if equipped)

The air gap on your countertop prevents backflow. Remove the cap and clean out any debris. A clogged air gap can cause drainage problems or water backing up.

Not all installations have an air gap - look for a small fixture near the sink faucet.
6

Run the Disposal/Clear Sink Drain

Sometimes a clogged kitchen sink drain affects dishwasher drainage. Run the disposal and ensure the sink drains properly before running the dishwasher again.

A slow-draining sink and dishwasher issues often share the same cause.
7

Listen for Drain Pump Operation

Start a drain cycle and listen for the drain pump. You should hear a humming sound. Complete silence may indicate a failed drain pump.

If the pump hums but nothing drains, it may be seized or the impeller damaged.

When to Call a Professional

  • Drain pump doesn't run at all during drain cycle
  • Pump runs but water doesn't drain (pump failure)
  • Check valve is stuck and preventing drainage
  • Drain hose connection inside dishwasher needs replacement
  • Control board isn't initiating drain cycle
