Before you ring

Four things that save a second visit

  1. The model and serial number, from the plate inside the door on the hinge side
  2. What the display is showing, including any alarm or service light
  3. Compartment temperatures if you have a thermometer inside
  4. How long it has been behaving this way, and what changed just before it started

Asked on the phone

Before anyone is dispatched

Do you work on a unit that is still under the manufacturer’s cover?

You can call us, but it is usually the wrong move. Work on a cabinet still covered by the maker belongs with a factory-authorised provider, so the cover is not put at risk. We are independent and have no part in that arrangement.

The freezer is fine and the fridge is warm. Is that a bad sign?

It is the most common call we take on a built-in column, and it is usually the less expensive half of the possible answers: an evaporator fan, a stuck defrost cycle, or a door seal that has stopped pulling. It can also be the fresh-food sealed system. The two are told apart by readings, not by symptoms.

Can you get the unit out without wrecking the cabinets?

Most of the work does not need the unit out at all — the condenser, the fans, the controls and the defrost circuit are all reachable from the front once the grille is off. Where a cabinet genuinely has to come forward, the reveal and the fixings get measured and photographed first.

How is the service call handled?

It is a flat figure, quoted before anyone is dispatched, and it is credited in full against the repair if you decide to go ahead. Nothing is ordered and nothing is fitted until you have said yes to a number.

What if the answer is that it is not worth repairing?

Then that is the answer, and you get the reasoning: which system has failed, what the part costs to obtain, and how the rest of the cabinet looks. We would rather lose the job than fit a compressor to a cabinet that will be back in eighteen months.

What callers said afterwards

From 868 reviews of this workshop.

  • It held around twenty and went no colder. He measured across the evaporator and found the fan turning slow on a failing motor. Replaced it, then stayed to watch the pull down before leaving.

    Ravi P. · Oak Hill

  • Village house, tight galley, and the maker had quit. He worked around the cabinetry without scratching a thing, replaced a burnt out valve solenoid, and the ice has been steady since.

    Bryce H. · Newton Highlands

  • The door had stopped latching and the racks were sticking on their runners. The hinge had dropped over the years. He realigned and shimmed it, lubricated the racks, and did not rush any of it.

    Nils A. · Belmont
